catupuncture

Poor lil' P*nut.
She's a sweet petite calico who is a mature lady cat now, and subject to aches and pains from arthritis. She lives with my friend Janet, who racked her brains for a good way to soothe her discomfort. Then Janet found Dr. Lisa Reising and the Animal Healing Center. There they specialize in alternative therapies such as homeopathy and flower essences, Chinese and Western herbal medicine, and nutrition. P*nut herself is benefitting from their acupuncture services.

Here's a couple of interesting photos of P*nut in treatment. Don't worry, that may look scary but P*nut is in no discomfort. In fact, she is gaining some relief.

Poll Finds Pets Are People Too!

A new poll by AP-Petside.com investigates how much pet owners treat animals as human beings. Findings reveal that half (50%) of all American pet owners say their animals are just as much a part of the family as any person in the household.

Another interesting bit of data - 43% of pet owners think their pooch or kitty has their own sense of style, with 1 in 5 dressing them up in fashionable attire. Other topics include where pets sleep, whether owners feed human food to their pets, celebrating pets birthday, top pet names, and whether or not pets are featured in family photos and holiday greetings.

Here's the link to the story

The only thing I found surprising is that there weren't more people who said they treated their pets like part of the family.

"kittens' wedding," and other victorian oddities

In times past, we know to our sorrow, there was no way to control the many litters of kittens and puppies that happen. Well. . . where there is material, man's busy mind will find something to do, and in the curious time of our recent civilization known as Victorian, taxidermy caricatures came into being.

What are those? Simply put, make up little scenes and taxidermize the tiny critters in poses and dresses appropriate. The result, at least for those of us with a feel for the Victorians, is a crazy mix of sweet, sad, cute and creepy.

I can't believe I have never yet posted on the master of such tableaux, Mr. Walter Potter (1835-1918). Best known for his "The Kittens' Wedding," Potter deftly arranged such other sweeping dioramas as "The Squirrels' Club," and "Athletic Toads." Well, you'd have to see them. And you can, along with a lot of background material, at this excellent page courtesy of A Case of Curiosities. the smallest feline is a masterpiece, right?

Leonardo da Vinci said that. And I'm saying it's Friday and you can't MAKE me be too serious. So enjoy this mashup of art history and kitty style.

(I'm pretty sure this must have been liberally borrowed from its creator.
If that's you, A. Excellent work. B. Can I credit you? Please?)

A horse is a horse, of course, of course

In an effort to stop vets' drugs from entering human diets, the nations of continental Europe, where two million horses are reportedly eaten every year, will be enforcing a new law requiring horse owners to sign a pledge that their horses will not be eaten.

The new regulations come into force on July 1. Horses born after this date, and those born before June 30 who have not been issued a horse passport, will also have a microchip implanted.

A spokesman for the Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs said: "Horse passports will clearly identify those horses which are not eligible for the food chain if they have been treated with substances which are potentially harmful to humans.

meet another dog star

Sam Younghans has done a lot of interesting things and met many famous and beautiful people from the glory glamour days of the 1960's on. He has taken their pictures, borrowed their limos, and hung out at their watering holes on both coasts. Clearly it's been fun for him. And whom does he think of most fondly?

I can tell you this for sure: among the stars he's met, he firmly classifies his dog Duchess. For a fun, tender look at a dog well loved and well connected, take a look at the page he created for her among his "Stars of the Universe."

"white cat" by artist hazel fisher

"White Cat" by haz-elf on deviantART with thanks to the artist

(click on link for her deviantArt gallery)

British artist Hazel Fisher created this classic portrait in 2008, using Quink (a brand of ink). I was drawn to the clean quality of the light, as well as how perfectly she caught the little hairs that pop up around the edge of a balled-up cat. Sally's hair used to do that, a perfect fringe of black - so how much am I impressed by the challenge of portraying a white cat? A lot. But then, as she says, "Detail is important to me in both the careful planning of my ideas and in the visual outcome."

Fisher also creates playful and imaginative images, as you'll see on her website - look at the "Hexley" section in particular.

You can catch MRSA from animals

An infectious superbug, a strain of bacteria known as MRSA, which has evolved a resistance to antibiotics, has long plagued hospitals but in recent years has become more common in homes. About two years ago, scientists began to suspect that pets can spread this bacteria.

In the July edition of The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Richard Oehler of the University of South Florida College of Medicine and colleagues lay out the latest thinking on MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and pets.

The infections can be transmitted by animal bites and most threaten young children, the researchers note. "MRSA colonization has been documented in companion animals such as horses, dogs, and cats, and these animals have been viewed as potential reservoirs of infection."

"Bites to the hands, forearms, neck, and head have the potential for the highest morbidity," the scientists warn. They conclude: "Much more remains to be learned about MRSA and pet-associated human infections."

Pet Summer Safety

The weather is getting warmer, and hopefully here on the east coast, the rain will stop. Here are some good tips to help your furry friends enjoy the summer.

Transportation

Never leave your pet in an unattended car. On warm days, the temperature in your car can rise to 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, even with the windows slightly open.

When you bring your pet along on a car ride, use a pet safety harness. If an accident were to occur, a pet safety harness can ensure that every passenger is protected.

If your dog must ride in the back of a pick-up truck, make sure that he or she is in a crate that is secured to the bed of the truck. If you were to suddenly hit the brakes, swerve or be hit by a car, it could result in serious injury not only to your pet, but to other drivers.

Do not travel with your pet on an airplane unless it's absolutely necessary. If you plan on bringing your pet on vacation, consider driving to your destination. Otherwise, think about leaving your pet behind under the care of a pet sitter or boarding kennel.

Wellness

Only use veterinarian-approved flea and tick control products. Over-the-counter products may contain ingredients that have been found to harm pets. For more information about what chemicals to avoid, click here.

Make sure that your pet is protected from heartworm. Dogs and cats are at higher risk of contracting heartworm during the summer because there is an increase of mosquitoes, which transfer the disease. Contact your veterinarian in order to determine the best schedule for heartworm testing and preventive medication for your pet.

Protect your pet from the heat by providing him/her with large amounts of fresh water and keeping them indoors with you and providing plenty of shade when they are spending time outdoors.
On hot days, limit your pet's exercise to the early morning or evening hours. Also, keep in mind that the hot asphalt can burn your pet's paws.
Precautions

Learn to identify the signs of heat stress: heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue. If your pet does become overheated, immediately lower his/her body temperature by applying cool (not cold) water over his/her body, and giving small amounts of water or ice cubes. Most importantly, get immediate help from a veterinarian.

Teach your dog how to get out of your pool. Like people, many dogs like cooling off in pools. Even if your dog can swim, tragedy can occur if he/she does not know how to exit the pool. This can be prevented by showing your pooch how to enter the pool via the stairs and guiding him or her back out. Never leave your pet unattended around a pool.

Make sure that your pet is always wearing a collar with an updated identification tag. Even if your pet has an implanted microchip, as of late 2003, animal shelters and humane societies may not have a universal scanner that can read every brand of microchip.

Meet me at the swimming hole

These incredible pictures of orangutans swimming in an Indonesian
river have left wildlife experts stunned.

Playing on the Rungan River, near to Palas Island on Borneo, these
orangutans can be seen swimming and submerging themselves in the muddy
waters.

For experts the behaviour of these orangutans – who like all apes have
a natural fear of water because of predators such as crocodiles -
could prove to be a significant step forward in their evolution.

“This is a rarity – to see orangutans coming down for a swim is
unheard of in the wild,” says Simon Husson – project advisor and
scientific consultant for Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation.

“However, we know that orangutans are intelligent and innovative."

dumas buys a green monkey and a blue macaw

A couple of days ago I posted a snippet of Alexandre Dumas pere's memoir, My Pets. At the time I thought I'd continue on the subject of his dogs, but what really caught me was this little vignette from Chapter XIII of how he acquired two unusual creatures:

* * *

Mademoiselle Desgarcins was a dog-faced monkey, and one of the tiniest of her species. Her birthplace was unknown; but, if we are to trust to Cuvier's classification, she must have seen the light somewhere on the old continent.
The way I became her possessor was quite simple and ordinary.
I had been to pay a visit to Havre. With what object ? Upon my word ! I can hardly say—perhaps it was to have a look at the sea. Once there, I had immediately been seized with the wish to be back in Paris.
But it was out of the question to return quite empty-handed. The only point to be decided was what I should take back with me from that seaport.
I had a wide range of choice—ivory toys from China, fans from the Far East, weapons and trophies from the South Sea Islands, and a hundred other curios. But none of these articles quite took my fancy.
I was strolling along the quay, as melancholy as the fantastic Dane of Shakespeare's immortal play, when I caught sight, at the door of a dealer in animals, of a green monkey and a blue macaw.
The monkey had put her little hand out between the bars of her cage and caught hold of my coat-tail.
The blue parrot was twisting its head about and gazing amorously at me out of its yellow eye, the pupil of which kept narrowing and dilating with the tenderest of tender expressions.
I am very amenable to demonstrations of the kind, and those of my friends who know me best declare that, for my own good name and my family's, it is a very lucky thing I was not born a woman.
I stopped therefore, pressing the monkey's paw in one hand, and gently scratching the macaw's head with the other, at the risk of meeting the same fate as Colonel Bro with his parrot. See my Memoirs.
But nothing of the sort occurred. Instead, the little monkey drew my hand gently to her mouth, put out her tongue through the bars and licked my fingers lovingly.

* * *

You can read the rest in Chapter XIII, "How I Was Over-Persuaded to Buy a Green Monkey and a Blue Macaw," in Alexandre Dumas, translated posthumously, My Pets (Alfred Allinson, trans. London: Methuen & Co., 1909)

Sick perverts

Muskogee County, OK, prosecutors on Tuesday charged a man and woman with fatally shooting and skinning a 7-week-old puppy they intended to make into a belt.

A judge ordered mental competency testing for Austin Michael Mullins, 26, and Krystal Lynn Lewis, 23.

Muskogee County sheriff’s Deputy George Roberson said Mullins shot the puppy 10 times with a .22-caliber pistol at a park near town, and Lewis then skinned the puppy at her apartment. The pair nailed the hide to a board displayed at the apartment and told investigators they planned to have it made into a belt.

2,500-year-old bird's nest found

A 2,500-year-old bird's nest has been discovered on a cliff in Greenland.

The nesting site is still continually used by gyrfalcons, the world's largest species of falcon, and is the oldest raptor nest ever recorded.

Three other nests, each over 1,000 years old, have also been found, one of which contains feathers from a bird that lived more than 600 years ago.

Like many falcons, gyrfalcons do not build nests out of sticks and twigs, but typically lay eggs in bowl-shaped depressions they scrape into existing ledges or old nests made by other birds such as ravens.

Extreme Mammals

Found only in Thailand and Myanmar, the bumblebee bat is no bigger than a bumblebee and weighs only about as much as a dime.

This is just one of the unusual animals featured at Extreme Mammals, where you can meet some of your more bizarre relatives.

How about you. Are you extreme?

Well, yes and no. On the normal side, we are warm-blooded, have hair, nurse our young and have three middle ear bones. Like ancestral mammals, we have sharp front teeth and grinding back teeth.

On the extreme side, our brains are remarkably big for our body size. Our thumbs can close against our fingers with both strength and delicacy. Our tail is just a remnant of a few hidden bones, and our body hair is very sparse.

How about walking around on two legs? What might seem to humans like the most normal thing in the world is actually one of our most unusual features. The only other mammals that travel primarily on two legs all hop like kangaroos. Walking human-style is rarer in mammals than laying eggs!

Want to sleep on your dead pet?

What could be more comforting than the memories of your late pet laid to rest beneath your sleeping head? If a cherished pet's death leaves you sleepless and missing that warm, furry embrace, then Patricia Moore of Naples, Fla., may have the answer: pillows stuffed with your pet's ashes.

Moore started Soft-Hearted Products after she lost her own dog, Samantha. Samantha was cremated and her ashes were returned to her owner in an urn that felt cold and impersonal.

"She was always with me," Moore said. "On my lap, on my bed, next to me. I missed that so much."

name that dog breed (all kinds of things)

You know, for someone who so loves the intersection of words and facts with life, I never gave any thought to how dog breeds get named. Why is Cash a "Brittany" spaniel? Brittany had their own spaniel? Why would Bretons want an amped-up spaniel?

See what I mean?

This also seems to have occurred to the folks at the late, great, much missed trivia site known as Vitamin Q, where I found a list including:

1 Affenpinscher – this comical breed has a name which translates as monkey biter! It is a pinscher (German terrier) which has an ape-like appearance.
2 Dandie Dinmont – this small terrier is named after a character in Walter Scott's novel Guy Mannering who breeds similar dogs.
3 Schipperke- bred to work on barges, its name means little boatman in Dutch.
4 Shar Pei – means sand-skin in Chinese, since this dog has a rough, sandpapery skin.
5 Malamute – named after the Inuit people (the Mahlemut) who bred them.
6 Poodle – from the German verb pudeln (to paddle in water); the breed was originally used for retrieving waterfowl
7 Springer Spaniel – springing means flushing out game birds; spaniel refers to the dog's supposed Spanish origin.
8 Papillon – named after its dramatic ears which vaguely resemble butterfly wings.
9 Yarmouth Toller – this retriever was bred to toll (luring wildfowl close to the hunters) and is named after Yarmouth County in Nova Scotia.
10 Basset – this short-legged dog gets its name from French bas, meaning low.

Rest of the post here. It doesn't include Brittany spaniels, but it seems they get their name from, you guessed it, Brittany, are also called Epagneuls or Bretons, and are likely the product of crossbreeding between English setters and French spaniels.

cat poet card!

This past weekend in Nevada City, California -- at a shop named Laloo, just for TMI -- I came across this splendid card by Ganapati Studios. Had to have. Of course. The quote reads, "To a poet, silence is an acceptable response, even a flattering one. -- Colette"

I'd seen Ganapati Studios cards before up here where I live. Turns out they are based in the Wallingford/Fremont area of Seattle. They create their collaged images from their love of antique paper cutouts and decorations, as well as a sure and unafraid sense of color. They do have a few other kitty cards in their mix, as you may see in their card page. An additional joy is their dedication to giving back to the world community, so every time you buy a treat from Ganapati Studios, you support excellent causes.

Isn't that a beautiful little kitty? I wish I could get Elizabeth to wear . . . anything.

Hypoadrenocorticism - A Disease in Dogs

Hypoadrenocorticism is a kind of disease that could be seen among dogs. This type of disease is a rare but serious one. If you can not take a good care, treatment, then this disease could be the cause of your dog's death.

This disease happens with dogs as underproduction of hormones in adrenal glands. The question is why this is happens? There would be the some reasons definitely, discussed below:

We can say there are two main reasons for that disease: Pituitary gland does not work properly and immunity system is damaged and as a result of it - raise problems for adrenal glands. Hypoadrenocorticism develops as pituitary glands does not secrete the proper amount of hormones.

What is the symptoms?
This disease is common one in humans and the symptoms shown is quit similar to just like among human. It is slow starter disease for both human and dogs and the symptoms does not appear at the beginning. Symptoms will appear as the disease progress. But some common symptoms are given below:
  • Feeling weak
  • Vomiting
  • Loosing hair
  • And diarrhea also
As we are all aware of that the diarrhea and vomiting would be the cause of serious dehydration -so we have be careful of that. Other symptoms are like abdominal pains and even blood in its stool.

Maintain a diagnosis :
It is very hard to keep the proper diagnose of this disease as this symptoms are very common with the symptoms that could seen for kidney failure. To get sure of that disease, some veterinarians injects pituitary hormone to see the response from the glands. If there is no response, then they get sure of that disease.

How To Give Proper Treatment?
As I discussed above that this disease appears for underproduction of hormones. So treatment for that has to injects hormones with right quantity. You can give him some hormones supplements to help the gland.

dumas writes about a few pets

Alexandre Dumas (Pere, I believe) speaks of living and writing in the country. . .

The first necessity to a man who works and works hard is solitude. Society is the distraction of the body; love the occupation of the heart; solitude the religion of the soul.
At the same time I do not love a lonely solitude. I prefer the solitude of the terrestrial paradise that is to say, a solitude peopled with animals. I adore all animals—except those of the human species…

I had—not all at once, but one after the other— five dogs: to wit—Pritchard, Phanos, Turk, Caro, and Tambo. I had a tame vulture—Diogenes. I had three monkeys—one bearing the name of a celebrated translator, another that of an illustrious novelist, and the third—a lady ape—that of a successful actress. The reader will readily understand my motives for not mentioning these names, which had been mostly given in reference to some detail of the private life or some physical peculiarity of the original.
Now, as a great novelist has said,—I would tell you which, but I really am not quite sure, "private life must be held sacred."
So we will, if you please, call the translator Potich; the novelist, the Last of the Laidmanoirs; and the she-monkey, Mademoiselle Desgarcins.

I had, moreover, a big blue and red parakeet called Buvat, and a green and yellow one known as Papa Leverard.
I had a cat named Mysouff, a golden pheasant named Lucullus, and a cock named Caesar.
Such is an accurate enumeration, I think, of all the animals inhabiting Monte Cristo (the rural area in which he was living at this time - Curator).
Add a peacock and pea-hen, a dozen fowls, and a pair of guinea-fowl, creatures I only set down here for the sake of completeness, their individuality being nil or next to it.

--Alexandre Dumas, translated posthumously, My Pets (Alfred Allinson, trans. London: Methuen & Co., 1909)
A little later in the book he discusses the five dogs. That would make for some fun posting, I think.

Easy Steps to Communicate With Your Dog

Every dog lover have their own training method to communicate with their dog. But some times they just don't listen to it or follow the steps and the dog owner became frustrated. But there are some easy method for the dog owner to keep the best communication with.

If you can not keep a friendly communication with your dog, then as a result of that, there will be some common behavior problem like biting and jumping on the strangers, barking and urinating on the floors. First problem is that, the dog can not understand your plan - what you want to teach him? There we need the dog friendly training method to apply.

This method will build a good friendship and life long bond between you and your dog. You need to follow some basic steps to complete the training - which has been discussed given below:

Your kindness & Patience is Important: Beating, hitting and electric shock should have to avoid during the training time -actually this will never help you to train your dog. So should show your aggression, patience and love to your dog during training. This will help the dog to understand as a family member of the owner.

Training & Plying With Your Dog: We all knows that dog loves to play. So there should have some fun during training time. If your dog jumps on you all time, then praise him for sitting. For that you need to assist him by sitting yourself also. When he takes his seat, then give him some foods, it will make him feel that he has rewarded for his behavior.

Repetition of Techniques: See, pets especially dogs does not have the ability to learn something very quick or at a once. So, what ever you want to make him learn, repeat it several times. It will help him learn something you want. For that you also need to cooperate with him by keep your patience.

Be Positive Always: Some dog takes long times to get learn. So keep your patience and don't get angry. If you get angry, you dog will also take the negative point of it and get frustrated easily. It may cause to learn a negative behavior also.

There is no such so called techniques to teach your dog properly. You need to watch your dog's behavior and reaction - and give him training according to them. Talk to your dog with soft and low voice regularly - you will definitely become a loyal life friend soon.

Meet echidna - the strangest creature evah!

Here's a long-beaked echidna, one of the oldest, rarest, shyest, silliest-looking mammals on earth.

They lay leathery eggs, as reptiles do, but then feed the so-called puggles that hatch with milk — though drizzled out of glands in the chest rather than expressed through nippled teats, and sometimes so enriched with iron that it looks pink.

For reasons that remain mysterious, these monotremes have multiple sets of sex chromosomes, four or more parading pairs of XXs and XYs, or something else altogether: a few of those extra sex chromosomes look suspiciously birdlike.

Another avianlike feature is the cloaca, the single orifice through which an echidna or platypus voids waste, has sex and lays eggs, and by which the group gets its name. Yet through that uni-perforation, a male echnida can extrude a four-headed penis.

They are superior to humans at the other end of their bodies as well: Among humans, the neocortex that allows us to reason and remember accounts for 30 percent of the brain; in echidnas, that figure is 50 percent.

And while we're on the subject,
here's a short-nosed cousin:

blowing a mucus bubble through his nose as he recovers at Taronga Zoo's wildlife clinic in Sydney from injuries received during a road accident.
